- Good Food - What is most important is that the label on the food clearly indicates that it is intended for kittens. Food for mature cats does not have the needed nutrients for your kitten's growth. Also, avoid buying the cheapest food on the market since it likely has too many additives and chemicals and not enough quality nutrition. You can choose either wet food or dry or both, but make sure you do not overfeed your kitten or it will eventually have health problems from being overweight.
- Fresh Water - Kittens will need water to be available for them at all times. Many people want to give their new kitten milk instead but most cats are lactose intolerant so cow's milk will cause tummy discomfort.
- Warm Bed - Kittens will sleep 15 to 18 hours per day so they will need a cozy bed to curl up in. They will seek warmth so make sure that not only their bed is warm but the room is as well.
- Litter Box - Training a kitten to use a litter box is actually not very hard because cats are instinctively clean. They like their privacy though, so put the box where they will have easy access but some privacy as well. Put them in their litter box frequently especially after naps or eating. Give them lots of praise when they use the litter box and in no time it will be a habit for them.
- Scratch Post - You will never stop a cat from scratching! They instinctively need to sharpen their claws for hunting and protection. To avoid damage to your furniture, you need to divert the scratching to a scratch post. If you spray the post with catnip they will be more inclined to use it. Also, when you see them scratching where they shouldn't, immediately take them to the post and put their paws on it. Give lots of praise when they use it correctly.
- Toys - Kittens love to play. They will instinctively try to hunt their toys. It is important, however, that you do not allow your kitten to become too aggressive with their toys although most naturally grow out of this aggressive tendency.
- Veterinary Care - Kittens will need both vaccinations and worm treatments to keep healthy. When older they will also need to be spayed or neutered to prevent overpopulation.
- Safety - There are several potential dangers in our homes for little kittens that owners need to be aware of. First of all, many household plants are highly toxic to cats and kittens. Secondly, electrical cords are very tempting to chew. Finally, beware of leaving the toilet seat up. Many kittens have accidentally drowned by jumping into a toilet.
- Love - The easiest part of caring for a new kitten is giving them all the love and attention they need and enjoy. So dish it out and they will soak it in.
